Abbotsford is a Canadian city located in the Lower Mainland of British Columbia, adjacent to Greater Vancouver. It is the fifth largest municipality in British Columbia, home to 133,497 people. Its Census Metropolitan Area, which includes the District of Mission, is the 23rd largest in Canada, with 170,191 people. Abbotsford has the third highest proportion of visible minorities among Census Metropolitan Areas in Canada, after the Greater Toronto Area and Greater Vancouver.[2] It has also been named by Statistics Canada as Canada’s most generous city in terms of donations for nine straight years.

Abbotsford is the largest city by area in British Columbia. It is home to the University of the Fraser Valley, TRADEX and Abbotsford International Airport, which hosts the Abbotsford International Air show.

The municipality’s southern boundary is the Canada–United States border, across which is Sumas, Washington. In Canada, it is bordered by Langley to the west, the Fraser River and Mission to the north, and Chilliwack to the east. Much of Abbotsford has dramatic views of Mount Baker (to the southeast) and the Coast Mountains (to the north). With little room for expansion along the river, the commercial area of the town moved south to the junction of the New Westminster-Yale Wagon Road, Wellington Avenue and Young Road, called “Five Corners.” A large subdivision called Centreville was built In 1881. The name Centreville was replaced In 1887 by the more popular “Chilliwhack.” The area was incorporated in 1908 as a separate municipality, the City of Chilliwack. The City and the Township co-existed for 72 years. In 1984 they merged to form the District of Chilliwack. The District of Chilliwack became the City of Chilliwack in the early 1990s.
